Marano also immaculately styled our story on Cat Power's Chan Marshall, who put editor-in-chief Steve Kandell through his paces in her adopted home of Miami, careening from house to karaoke bar to beach, discussing the arduous creation of her stunningly good new album, Sun, as well as the devastating breakup of her relationship, after five years, with actor Giovanni Ribisi.

The song I Don't Blame You, from 2003's You Are Free, has been taken as a rejection of fans' demands, specifically the lines: "They never owned it/ And you never owed it to them anyway." Online message boards have been filled with speculation over who it's about – Marshall herself or some other fame-troubled singer?
"I've never told anybody this," she says, "but that is about Kurt Cobain. It's about him blowing his head off."
-------------------
It's been presumed for a long time that she was writing about Kurt Cobain and she had previously said she would never talk about who she wrote the song about. But now she has confirmed it.
This quote makes me think about all the Chan/Kurt connections I've noticed. Actually, for a long time its been my opinion that Chan has truly been carrying the torch that Kurt Cobain left behind for that slightly-ambiguous/slightly-confessional kind of songwriting. It's a talent very few songwriters have, the ability to communicate that type of honesty in their work.
For me, its a really eerie coincidence that just at the exact time Kurt died, Chan was playing her first solo shows. The shows that led to her being signed to Matador and her music career really beginning. Chan played her first solo show on 4/6/94. Kurt was presumed to have died on 4/5/94. Chan played her second solo show (opening for Liz Phair) on 4/8/94, the day Kurt's death was announced to the world. I wonder if she was thinking of writing a song about him even then.
Then you have her first 2 albums, both kind of grunge-y affairs. In a way, kind of a continuation of the whole sound Kurt was doing. And, like Kurt and Nirvana, Chan was also taken under the wings of Sonic Youth early in her career. Sonic Youth had taken Nirvana on tour and now their drummer Steve Shelley was drumming and touring with Chan. Add to this that she later worked with Dave Grohl and Eddie Vedder and there are a lot of interesting parallels. I could also totally see Kurt making an album like the Covers Records style of just guitar and piano, but with originals.
