Re: 11/16/13 - Philadelphia, PA, Underground Arts
What a concert!! Much better than Nashville. As I expected, Chan seems to be in her stride now.
I was standing in line on the street talking with some friends I met at the show, Jeff, Chris, and Adrian, when around 7:30pm, Chan drives by with a small U-Haul attached to her car, waving to all of us, and goes around to the back of the venue. Doors were to open at 8:00pm, but this was delayed to about 8:20pm or so. No big deal.
I spent the show hanging out with my friend Rachel, who was so much fun to be around. Since we were so close to the stage we sat on the floor and watched Chan from there. Right in front of her about, 3 feet away. You cant see us in this picture, but you can tell where we were.
(uncle_erock)
Chan opened up with some guitar songs, which went down well. She had some lit incense on her guitar which she gave to my friend Rachel. She then moved to the piano for several songs.
This is when a weird thing happened. People started talking and chatting, a low murmur in the crowd got steadily louder as the songs were played. Its wasnt terribly loud but it was just totally rude. This venue was a basement and was pretty small, maybe 200-250 people(?). Eventually there were shouts from the audience of "Shut Up!!" and "Shhhhh!". Chan said, "I'm just trying to make a connection..." After the relative silence of the Nashville show, this was odd. As Chan went back to guitar, she quickly regained the attention of the crowd with a bit of humor. In fact, she had the audience in the palm of her hand in no time and the audience was noticably more respectful from this point on. She stopped for a moment for, as she said, "Talking", as she smoked a cigarette. People made requests and gave compliments. I took the opportunity to ask her about this song she played (it was also at the Brooklyn show), about "Land Of The Free". She said it was something from before the Covers Record. A couple minutes later, still chatting with the audience, I asked her when "Let Me Go" was going to be released. She said she didnt know and I said, "Oh, well, I love that song", she said "Thanks!" and gave me a big smile and a wink. "Let Me Go" was played at this show as well, and was better than the Nashville take. In fact, I'd say everything was better here than Nashville. She played some things I didnt hear at Nashville, "The Greatest", "Say", "House Of The Rising Sun", "Sea Of Love" (as a medley with "I've Been Loving You Too Long", et al), "Deep Inside", "Knockin' On Heaven's Door". She took a request for "Sweedeedee" after a fan spoke about what it meant to her. She also, gamely, played "Ramblin' Woman". This was after a fan said something like "Ramblin' Woman changed my life!". "Hank Williams!?", said Chan, seeing the irony, that she hadnt written that song. Also unique, was that she seemed to make up a song on the spot after a fan said her name was Marie. Pretty neat!! She definitely seemed to be in good spirits, especially after regaining the attention of the full crowd, there were some apologies like normal, and "AYMAM?"s but these werent heard nearly as much as the Nashville show. There were very few re-starts or fragment songs compared to Nashville. She handed me her cigarette at one point so she could start a song. I recorded some video at the beginning (20 minutes?), but security shut me and some others down. At the end of the concert she left before I could give her a gift. But then she returned, and I was able to give her a copy of Otis Redding's Otis Blue on vinyl. "You always sign my albums, so this is for you!". She waved it around to the crowd and seemed happy to receive it. A great show!!

Chan joking, taking requests from the audience, receiving Otis Blue from you... looks like a perfect night, indeed !

I also gave Nico Turner a composing book that recycled this Bob Dylan cover from an LP as the cover of the book. I told her she could use it for songwriting.
I got to joke with her after the show that it was her on the cover. "Look, its you, Nico!" She said she'd use it on stage on her stand!

Chan: "I love you, are you crazy?"
Loud cheers from the audience.

Hi
You didn't miss anything: sharing files is not the purpose of this forum and therefore you won't find any bootlegs here, only links to youtube videos.
Someone may upload the concert there though, and if such a thing happen, you'll find a link on the forum.
Since you attended the Chicago concert, we would be happy to read what you think of it!

(on the right)
Last Saturday night, Cat Power‘s Chan Marshall played a solo set at Underground Arts. The long-running indie songwriter released her outstanding album Sun in 2012 and performed a full-band show at The Electric Factory in February of this year. Though Marshall wasn’t tremendously chatty during the solo set, it drew songs from across her catalog as well as a range of covers – “House of the Rising Sun,” “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” – which Marshall is known for making her own anyway. Check out a gallery of photos from the performance below.
--------------------
I'd say that she was chatty. There was a whole 5 minute Q&A thing happening after the loudmouths left.
