10/21/13 - Brooklyn, NY, Glasslands, "An Elliott Smith Tribute Show"
Setlist (incomplete):
Names - Solo on piano
Between The Bars - with band
Angeles - with band
Pretty (Ugly Before) - with band + Duet with Sky Ferreira
This is the 61st performance of the year. This is the 1st of 2 performances Chan will play before heading out on her first Solo Tour since 2006, which is set to run from 11/6/13-11/21/13, with Nico Turner as special guest.
Chan's set was expected to be a solo performance. But, surprisingly she was joined by some past and current bandmates for the last 3 songs of her 4 song set.
Band:
Adeline Jasso - Guitar
Judah Bauer - Guitar
Jim White - Drums
??? - Bass
??? - Keyboard (Not Gregg)
This event is a charity concert supporting the Elliott Smith Memorial Fund.

On the subject of Elliott Smith, just how much contact did Chan have with him? Has anyone ever seen a picture of them together? Just curious.
Short Review of 11/20/98, Frankfurt:
http://musik.antville.org/stories/1133632/
On November, 20th, 1998 there was a concert at the Frankfurt University (KoZ) where I saw Cat Power for the first time. There were three acts that night. It started with Quasi (Sam Coomes on keyboards and Janet Weiss who joined Sleater-Kinney later on drums) who made a lot of noise for a duo. The last performer was Elliott Smith. He seemed lonely and lost. In between there was Chan Marshall and two guys from the Dirty Three. Jim White on drums and Mick Turner on guitar. It was probably the most mesmerizing set I have ever attended. Chan hid behind her long pony and sang like in trance. She wasn't there, she was in her own world but it worked out. Mick Turner provided the connection to mother earth with his slow and thoughtful guitar play. I couldn't avert my eyes from Chan's long, brown hair and I was totally taken by her singing. Immediately after the show I bought their record Moon Pix which they had recorded in Australia earlier that year.
So far this is the only show I can find that they are both a part of. Might they have played more shows together around this time? Seems possible, but I am not certain.
Checking the Elliott Smith tourdates here (http://www.sweetadeline.net/1998.html) I dont see the above mentioned 11/20/98 concert. So maybe some other Elliott Smith dates are missing there.
In January 1999, they are both on tour in Australia and play some of the same venues, but it doesnt appear that they a play any shows together.
There are also the last dates of Chan's 2000 Europe Tour, which I believe that she canceled and did not appear at:
7/3/00 - Malmo, Sweden, KB (w/ Elliott Smith and Flaming Lips) - Canceled
7/4/00 - Gothenburg, Sweden, Slottsskogen, "Gothenburg Festival", (w/ Elliott Smith and Flaming Lips) - Canceled
7/5/00 - Stockholm, Sweden, Muchenbryggeriet (w/ Elliott Smith and Flaming Lips) - Canceled
Note also, that Smith died before he could play the "All Tomorrow's Parties Festival" on 11/8-9/03 that Cat Power played at.
Any other connections?

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/cat-power-and-sky-ferreira-duet-at-elliott-smith-tribute-show-20131022
Cat Power soon walked onstage and raised a glass from behind the piano — "cheers to Elliott," she said. She played a solo version of her own tune, the haunting "Names," from 2003’s You Are Free, before her band joined for a jazz/R&B-flecked "Between the Bars," which hit with extra punch due to Marshall's own history of alcohol abuse and mental illness.
She handed out knit caps, like those Smith so often wore (Marshall sported a yellow-gold beanie over her bleached blonde hair all night), and closed with From a Basement on the Hill’s "Pretty (Ugly Before)." Ferreira joined Marshall onstage, and the two traded verses and invited the crowd to join — "Fucking sing it if you know it!" shouted Marshall — on the repeated outro: "I was so ugly before didn't know what to do." The jam-packed audience inside the DIY venue all sang in hushed tones together, in unison.

The night ended with the second most-awkward performer I've ever seen, Chan Marshall of Cat Power, who took the stage in beanie and hoodie as if she just came off the streets in Portland. She sat at the piano for "Names," the maudlin number off of her own You Are Free, shaking her head as she forgot the chord change again and again. "I'm back," she murmured to the crowd, no doubt meaning back to her ways of disintegrating onstage. Joined by drummer Jim White and a few others, Cat Power then did shambolic versions of "Between the Bars" and stumbled through a duet with Ferreira on "Pretty (Ugly Before)."

Re: 10/21/13 - Brooklyn, NY, Glasslands, "An Elliott Smith Tribute Show"
All the reviews that came out in Spin, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, etc. pretty much cover it. It kind of hurt to see Chan struggling at first with the very simple chords of "Names" - it's all black keys, it's the most easy song in the world to play on the piano, how she could mess it up is kind of unfathomable. She did say, "I'm back" and "Professional", seemingly reminding herself to keep it together. It was cute and odd when she threw out hats into the audience, and she also bizarrely asked audience members to give her different colored plastic bags, I'm not sure what that was all about. She never introduced the band members so I'm still not sure who they all were, but I got the feeling there wasn't much rehearsal beforehand. Musically I think the duet with Sky was the best part, but it was cool to see Chan play at all in such a tiny venue in Brooklyn, that took me back to when I first started seeing her play in the late '90s. Apparently Chan toured with Elliott Smith once so I'm sure that played a part in her agreeing to do this show. All in all a speial night and I'm glad I decided to go.
Re: 10/21/13 - Brooklyn, NY, Glasslands, "An Elliott Smith Tribute Show"
Thanks for writing about the show tumbleweed and posting the video! I'm glad you decided to go too and excited to see the other videos. What a unique show!
I'm not totally sold on that being Adeline playing on guitar. First off, did she dye her hair blonde? The guitar player's strumming style doesnt remind me of Adeline, though the telecaster does. Also, I dont think that is Annika on bass. I didnt know she even played anything. But, I could be wrong. Its hard for me to tell from the videos/pictures. Any thoughts, anyone?
Edit: Annika posted a picture of the show, so probably not her on bass.

The night's headliner was Cat Power's Chan Marshall, performing solo, then a with a small band. Marshall was a perfect choice, and a definite coup for organizers. During the same time period she basically was the female version of Smith, a troubled singer of unusual fragility who was able to broadcast her unease through really accomplished songwriting. They toured together, held each other in high esteem. He was the better performer at the time, not noted for the meltdowns that marked Marshall's early live career, but she turned out to be the survivor.
As a fitting tribute to the charities Outside In (which benefits homeless youth in Portland) and Free Arts for Abused Children (which offers arts programs for victims of abuse), Marshall started with "Names" from her 2003 record He War. She struggled at first to remember the chords, but even in pieces, that song is tough to turn away from. In a lighter digression, she passed out knit caps to the audience like the one she wore as a tribute to Smith's meek signature look.
"Between the Bars" came next. It was the moment where you remembered what a runaway freight train of emotion Marshall's voice can be. Honestly, she seemed slightly off throughout, disheveled in a way that sort of unfortunately recalled her breakable early career presence more than the last half decade spent as a reliable festival main-stager. In the moment, given the subject matter and the occasion, I can't say that it didn't add a certain sort of resonance. Her singing here was truly, inarguably beautiful.
It all sort of broke down further from there. "Angeles" turned into an extended band member jam halfway through. "Pretty (Ugly Before)" ended the night, with vocal help from Ferreira, who Marshall amusingly summoned as "the damsel." The two shared a mic for half of the song, before Marshall shuffled around, handing hers off to audience members, dodging the limelight.
She came back at its conclusion to rouse the whole room into a continued a cappella outro of its chorus. "I felt so ugly before, I didn't know what to do..." sang everyone. It's a feeling so dark and raw and relatable that singing it all together was the only way to make it feel alright.

Chan Marshall dressed up as Smith for the show, clad in his characteristic beanie and hoodie ensemble (plus the addition of an Occupy pin). After performing her stingingly pertinent You Are Free piano ballad "Names" ("The cards were stacked against him"), she picked up a plastic shopping bag and began tossing beanies out in the crowd, making an effort to lighten the mood. She stared intensely at members of the crowd during a stark, loyal take of "Between the Bars", before her band joined her for a stompy rendition of "Angeles" that was pierced with arty shrieks, and then an extended version of "Pretty (Ugly Before)", on which she brought up Sky Ferreira to duet and then passed the mic around in the front row.

Re: 10/21/13 - Brooklyn, NY, Glasslands, "An Elliott Smith Tribute Show"
After Chan tweeted the photo of Kraig Jarrett Johnson, I now think he was the mystery keyboard player. Could be wrong. I have 2 partial videos of the first song with band, the full second song, beginning of third. Vids are too long to post. Will try at some point to play with iMovie so I might post them.
