Cat Power playing in Elliott Smith tribute, Brooklyn, NY

Sky Ferreira and Cat Power are set to headline an Elliott Smith tribute show in New York later this month (Oct13) to mark the 10th anniversary of the singer/songwriter's suicide. The Low Anthem, Speedy Ortiz star Sadie Dupuis, Yoni Wolf and former Chairlift member Aaron Pfenning will also be part of the line-up, while Ferreira's boyfriend, Diiv frontman Zachary Cole Smith, will team up with the Everthing Is Embarrassing hitmaker for a special collaboration. The gig, held at Glasslands in Brooklyn on 21 October (13), will mark both Ferreira and Smith's first performances since they were arrested on drug charges in the Big Apple last month (Sep13). Miss Misery Oscar nominee Smith died from two self-inflicted stab wounds on 21 October, 2003, aged 34.

I was thinking this would be like the Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Janis Joplin Tributes that Chan was a part of, where she only sang 1 or 2 songs. But headlining the event, I am guessing she will play more than 1 or 2. Cool!

I don't think one writer's choice to use the word "headline" has any bearing on the number of songs Chan will play. Especially this writer, who can't get the facts straight about Zach and Sky- they were arrested in the Hudson Valley, upstate New York, not "the Big Apple" and they performed after their arrest a cover of "Nude as the News" and Sky has played other shows since then. Anyway, still trying to decide if this event is worth $50 to me... It also occurs to me, this event is right after the CMJ festival in NY, the big indie rock festival where there are always surprise performances, so maybe Chan will turn up playing something else in the NY area? Like one of Pitchfork's surprise shows maybe?

Well that was an unexpected surprise. Though she was billed as playing solo, Chan played only one song solo on piano, "Names", then played three songs with a band! I couldn't identify everyone in the band but I'm reasonably certain it was Jim White on drums, Judah Bauer, 2 blond girls, and another guy on keys I didn't recognize. I don't think it was Gregg Foreman; he had brown hair not black. The band played three songs, "Between the Bars," "Angeles," and "Pretty (Ugly Before)". Sky Ferriera, who played before Chan, joined her and the band onstage for the last song, which was really sweet. I took videos! Don't have time to post them all now, but I posted a short one from the last song on my Tumblr, plotslaidthick.tumblr.com.
