This is a really in-depth interview with Aitken about this whole project and some other things.

Re: Cat Power joins Doug Aitken's Station to Station tour
Chan's appearance on the tour tonight in Barstow caught me off guard. I didnt see her listed for this stop some time after the dates were announced, on the Station To Station site. I thought maybe it was decided she would only play the other 2. I have seen a few sites on the web list her for the Los Angeles stop but the official Station To Station website doesnt list her for LA at the moment. I wonder if she'll play there too?

This is a good article about what some of the train ride was like.
(excerpts)
In Santa Fe, one stop before Winslow, Aitken tried to find male flamenco dancers, but could only locate two young women at a local dance school. They enjoyed the first performance so much that they drove themselves to Winslow and joined the train. (Famous or not, none of the performers were paid.) Aitken’s only instructions to the dancers were to “not dance” and to create “tension.” In practical terms, that meant using only their feet and limiting arm movements. A few days later, in L.A., their arms were back in action. Happenings need to happen.
The events were more like concerts than anything else, with stages for the musicians to work with. Activities and performers around the stages tried to productively disorient and surprise the audience. When it worked, people noticed each other and the work in front of them.
All of the passengers were vetted by Aitken himself, and there was little tension or selfish behavior. The enterprise rolled on with a few whispered conflicts among the staff. At one point, someone had to determine whether nudity was allowed at one location. It wasn’t, but the show went on. I miss it.

Over at the Temple Theater, New Frontier alumnus Doug Aitken presented his singularly ambitious project, Station to Station. At once a documentary film, a digital tapestry, a series of happenings, and an elaborate, many-pronged experiment, Station to Station is 61 1-minute films, presented in succession, that were recorded over 24 days on or near a commissioned train traveling from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
The films are dominated by musical performances, as we visit stage sets by Beck, Cat Power, and Ariel Pink and witness onboard jams by Thurston Moore and others. There are also kinetic drawings dictated by train movements, digitally mapped laser art that shadows the track, photo essays, sculptures, lectures and more. The effect is unique in that it unfurls less like a feature film than as a swift deploy of ideas, images, and sounds. Instead of an attention grabbing narrative, there’s a barrage of short-attention-span information, and the effect is less about 61 indelible films than a collective, accumulative sense of creative exuberance.
Very excited to see a 1 minute clip of CP! DVD soon please!
