4. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Green River
5. Otis Redding - The Immortal Otis Redding
6. Liz Phair - Exile In Guyville
7. Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
8. Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
9. Iggy Pop - The Idiot
10. David Bowie - The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars
------------------------
From her recent Spotify Interview she lists the following 5 Favorites.
1. Otis Redding - Bootleg, including "These Arms Of Mine". ("It's not in Paris.")
2. Billie Holiday - Unknown Album including "Strange Fruit".
3. Husker Du - Metal Circus EP
4. Bob Dylan - Bootleg Series Vol 1-3 (Rare And Unreleased) including "Moonshiner".
5. Jay-Z - The Black Album
------------------------
From her January 2008 Interview with Oprah Magazine she lists the following as favorites.
Boubacar Traoré - Kar Kar - "He's from Mali, and he's in his 60s. He sings in his tribal language and a French crossover language. A lot of the songs are about women, community, families, God, and survival. It's like the blues—very repetitive and very gospel-y in its cadence."
Miles Davis - Ascenseur Pour L'éChafaud - "This is the soundtrack to the Louis Malle film Elevator to the Gallows. I hear a bit of Coltrane and other people's riffs, too. It has a lot of emotional ups and downs, it's elegant, and it's lyrical."
Bob Dylan - Live at the Gaslight - "This was only recently released. It's mellow; I'm really into the mellow thing. He does 'Barbara Allen' and a version of 'Moonshiner' that's so different from the one I'd first heard. It's a peaceful record."
The Rolling Stones - England's Newest Hitmakers - "This was their first, with songs like 'Walking the Dog' and 'I'm a King Bee.' You hear in their sound how much they admire people like Chuck Berry. I've always loved this record; it was my stepdad's, and it stuck."
--------------------------
Mary J. Blige - The Breakthrough - From her 2012 Pitchfork interview: "The R&B great's 2005 "The Breakthrough" is important to her, desert-island important..."

Chan on Nina Simone:
There’s an outstanding performance of “Ain’t Got No” / “I Got Life” that I feel like really explains a lot from that era of Nina’s life, which I discovered when I was around 38 and it just blew my mind. She's very comfortable being a voice for people, she's empowered. she's very calm and dignified. It’s like she’s outside of the lane of the performer and stepping into the lane of the consciousness. She’s maintaining the song structure but peering out into the audience as a spiritual, conscious being. It’s as if she's a doctor to the audience, and everyone can take their own prescription personally.
