On en avait parlé en septembre dans la rubrique "Sun's press coverage" mais une piqure de rappel ne fait pas de mal!

Interviews - Page 3 Empty New Interview in New Zealand's Rip It Up Magazine

Post  Cokelike Tue 4 Dec - 6:36

New Interview in New Zealand's Rip It Up Magazine.

Maybe someone could find a copy of this for all of us?

Excerpt here:

http://ripitup.co.nz/contentitem/artist-spotlight-cat-power-sun/3850

Like a lone orchid by a hospital bed, Chan Marshall’s music has continued to blossom throughout a career fraught by self-doubt, alcoholism and an eventual break down. On new album Sun, her first since 2006, fierce determination and singular talent has won out once more.

Chan Marshall is talking about coming face-to-face with her idol, the man she calls God Dylan. “He says, ‘So we finally meet,’“ Marshall recalls, imitating the Zimmerman deadpan. “‘I got your calls.’“

Marshall, the irrepressible force known as Cat Power, had been trying to open for Dylan since the mid-1990s. It never happened, but they finally met, although Marshall declines to divulge what else they chatted about except to say, “He’s more of a man than I ever thought he would be.”

Dylan’s name came up on a recent afternoon the 40-year-old singer-songwriter was giving interviews about Sun, her first album of original material since 2006. Taking visitors in the tiny kitchen of a bungalow at one of her favorite Hollywood haunts, Chateau Marmont, she’s trying to connect the dots — between her hardscrabble artistic beginnings in New York City and her jet-setting present, between the woman who was hospitalised with a breakdown about the time The Greatest came out and the dynamo who’s taken on virtually every aspect of her creative life, between the fragile bloodletting of her early albums and piquant observations on Sun.

All that, she points out, weaved its way into the cloth that makes her seventh album a spectacular show of independence and bold feat of artistry. “I’ve got ‘fabric’ all over the place,” she says. “You do when you get older.”

Interviews - Page 3 Empty Interviews Added

Post  Cokelike Wed 26 Dec - 9:14

Added the following interviews (I'm pretty sure these werent included before):

9/6/12 - Bullett Media Interview
http://bullettmedia.com/article/cat-power-here-comes-the-sun/

9/XX/12 - Dazed Digital Interview
http://www.dazeddigital.com/music/article/14367/1/qa-music-cat-power

9/22/12 - Mojo Interview
http://www.pop-catastrophe.co.uk/cat-power-mojo-interview-press-uk/

9/XX/12? - Elle Interview
http://www.ellecanada.com/living/celebrity/elle-interview-catching-up-with-cat-power/a/65776/2

--------------------------

The Mojo Interview (the link is for scans of the pages) is particularly interesting and IMO a must-read.

Do you you have a "Gold Standard"? Like "I'll be happy when I make my 'Astral Weeks'"? Have you ever felt you've reached that with one of your records?

Chan: Moon Pix is probably my Astral Weeks. Why? I dont know. The Covers Record is my Blood On The Tracks. And my first record is some bootleg. This is probably my Black Album. The Jay-Z one.

---------------------------

Likewise, The Elle interview is also pretty interesting if much shorter.

Do you still have your '50s Silvertone guitar?
"I smashed it in Paris. It was either me out the window or the guitar, so I chose the guitar."

What happened? What made you so angry?
"My boyfriend at the time [Ribisi] was with a girl he said he would never see again. And I found them together under the stairs in the hallway. [Sighs] That was a rough night. That was my birthday."

----------------------------

I wonder if she is actually speaking of her vintage Silvertone that she used for years and years (most notably as her main guitar from 2003-2005) before it was broken in 2006? I assume it was repaired after that and she is saying that she smashed it and it has been damaged again?? Certainly, a shame and I hope it can one day be repaired (again). That guitar is basically living Cat Power history.

I read or saw in an interview that she indeed broke her silvertone because of her boyfriend (before Ribisi), but it was at that time the 1448.
And then she bought the U1 black dano . She used it until it has been broken by a sound engineer on stage in 2006.
Then until today, she plays on stage with a copper silvertone U1.

Right, I'm not sure how much stage time the first one saw.

But the second one you speak of, that one was certainly with her for many years. I think thats the one she's talking about it, but it is unclear.

She also had this guitar starting in 2006 after the accident you speak of:

I think the "Elle" interview is wrong, she was talking about her 1448, and she wasn't (as far as I know Very Happy ) with Ribisi yet. I'll try to re-find the video interview.
The chestnut guitar is so lovely in sound and design. I wonder why she didn't play it more often. I only saw her with it in the rolling stone sessions, I can listen to this version of Love and communication, night and day and never get bored. This is so simple, I mean her voice, her guitar and that's all. This is beautiful.

Her main guitar, from the early 90s until about 2001 was a Silvertone 1448. That is the vintage Silvertone she broke in the hotel in Paris. Around the same time, she got the black Danelctro U1. I'm not sure if she actually had this before the Silvertone was busted.
