For the first time in years, Cat Power will play without her band.

A lot of fans are excited for the shows, especially after Cat Power (real name Chan Marshall) was forced to cancel tour dates surrounding her 2012 album, “Sun,” because of medical problems.

Ready to hit the road again, the singer-songwriter said she can't afford to tour with her band and a full crew, so she decided to go it alone.

“There's so many people I didn't get to connect with for the 'Sun' tour, and it's very depressing to me. There's so many cities I wasn't able to take it,” Marshall told us while she was on a tour stop in North Carolina. “This is just me trying to go places and sing songs that everybody says they miss. They miss the old Cat Power and all the depressing songs.”

Whether it's her older, sparse tunes or something more layered from “Sun,” all of Marshall's songs begin with a simple impulse to create one element of what she calls a triad — notes, tempo and lyrics.

Once she has all three, she has a song. It's all very free-form and “there are no rules,” Marshall said. She always travels with a guitar within reach, and most of her songs end up recorded on her iPhone and later put together in the studio.

Right now, Marshall is focused on the tour, but she constantly worries about her health. She's scared of getting sidelined again but said the solo tour (which involves her, an acoustic guitar and her dog, Mona) will keep her focused on the moment.

“I just want to enjoy my life and sing songs that I like and hopefully sing songs that make people happy,” Marshall said. “My goal is to really connect with people.”

What tour, I wonder. Australia or dates after that? Will it be the Mick Turner/Nico Turner/Cat Power Tour?
