Ode to Chan 2.0 ?

I don't have time this morning to say more but later today or tomorrow i'll share with you my plans for this forum.
Ok, as you might have noticed, the forum is hosted on a free platform. It means that i'm not the owner of the domain name. If one day i decide to use another host, i won't be able to export the database: all of our messages will be stuck here. Worse: if one day, whatever the reason, the host stops its activity, we lose everything.
To avoid such a fate, i think that the safest and wisest move is to move and to go on a new host. It might cost a little money, i didn't search too seriously about that but i'll most certainly do.
It also means that there will be a new url. The good thing is that we'll be able to lose the "forumgratuit" part and keep only "odetochan"...or to take a new name if we want.
I love the name "Ode to Chan" but after all, it doesn't even contain the name "Cat Power", which is maybe not very intelligent from me.
To move also means that we won't be able to export our messages. We would start from scratch. The forum is not large enough yet for this to be an unbearable problem but we have to think about it now.
Your thoughts about this are welcome.
Ps: je taperai une version française dès que j'aurais un peu de temps.

I'd be interested to know what the cost would be for the new host.

I like "Ode to Chan". But I'm not attached to it. I dont have any suggestions at the moment, maybe others do.

Copy/Paste.
What would the new site entail? Would it still be a blog/forum? Or would there be other parts?

What kind of other parts are you thinking of?
What i would have loved to do is to create a "real" web site, not only a forum or a blog but i don't have the technical knowledge nor the artistic skills to do it.

I dont either.
I'm not entirely sure what parts I'd want to see. Basically, I'd want the "real" website with the ability to add new sections whenever they are required. I'd want to have the interview link page as its own page and less "hidden" than where it is. And probably a more cohesive discography section than what we have here. A videography page that would be insane to put together, but I would try. And likely a lot of other things. I do know someone who can make a website, so many I could pay her to get it going and have her show me the ropes on how to update it. I'll ask next time I talk to her. If we move to another forum though, I am okay with that. I'll bring all my stuff with me.

Re: Ode to Chan 2.0 ?
And there is nothing preventing you from making a website and later on reintroducing a forum when you get the hang of the whole thing(:
Well....
Nicolaua, I appreciate the difficulties you anticipate for this board in its present location. I'm Mr. New Guy here, but I'd suggest you go ahead with a move at your earliest convenience. The longer you wait, the more you'll lose in transition. I, too, am bereft of the artistic and technical skills needed to build a Web site: I've always fallen back on templates, which is an extremely limiting factor.

The best (which doesn't mean the cheapest) solution that i've found: 37€ /year (host + Domain name).Cokelike wrote:I'd be interested to know what the cost would be for the new host.Nicolaoua wrote:Ok, as you might have noticed, the forum is hosted on a free platform. But there would still be a lot of work to do because it would mean building the whole site from scratch (only technically, because we already know what would be the content).
Re: Ode to Chan 2.0 ?
I think that we'll stick here for a while, but i've created a facebook page that will become the new "face" of Ode to Chan and replace the blog. Here is the adress: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ode-to-Chan-the-Cat-Power-forum/549691605175951#
Re: Ode to Chan 2.0 ?
I hope that this facebook page will bring more contributions from casual visitors. Anyway it should allow us to highlight the best (The Greatest ah ah!) from the forum.
Re: Ode to Chan 2.0 ?
The project is still alive! I'm learning the basics of web site building and i'm going to work for a web hosting service: it should help!
