Les inédits/unreleased tracks

Projet tentaculaire et cousin du topic "Bootlegologie", je souhaite recenser ici tous les titres chantés par Cat Power qui ne sont jamais parus officiellement sous aucune forme que ce soit mais dont nous possédons quand même une trace sonore. La quasi totalité de ces inédits seront bien entendu des performances live.
Il va sans dire que toute aide pour mener à bien ce projet sera la bienvenue!

Dans un premier temps, ce sera de l'info brute, que je compte ensuite affiner en précisant quand c'est possible les auteurs de ces chansons et les concerts où elles ont été jouées. Dans un second temps, on pourra préciser la qualité des sources connues.

Come On In My Kitchen was released on a compilation and I removed it from this list. I dont believe Tears Of A Clown has been performed, I think that was a mislabel for Tracks Of My Tears. Carry On is a common mislabel for Moby Grape's I Am Not Willing. I think its so awesome Chan is into alot of old obscure music. Listen to the original Naked, If I Want To by Moby Grape sometime. Her version is so different its unbelieveable. But then, thats how good she is.

I didn't put "From fur City" on the list because it has been released on "Speaking for Trees" DVD.

Fixed. When I get a chance I'll try to add some more information regarding these tracks.

Just wanted to write alittle bit about these unreleased tracks. Some of which are among my favorites of all of Chan's work.

Blue Moon/All I Have To Do Is Dream/Try A Little Tenderness Medley

As far as I can tell Chan started performing this in 2003. All three songs share a similar chord progression which no doubt influenced her to combine them to form this medley. This is one of the most used chord progressions in all of pop music, especially alot of motown music.

Her early versions followed this format:

1 verse of Dream, 2 verses of Blue Moon, 1 verse of TALT, 2 verses of Blue Moon, 1 verse of Dream.

This is how the song appears on the 2/27/03 KCRW Radio Session, which is my favorite version of this. Later on she added afew more verses from Dream and has performed this on piano as well as guitar. She released a version of this with just the All I Have To Do Is Dream lyrics as a bonus track on The Greatest.

Funny Things

Earliest version of this song I have heard is from the 11/11/01 concert and the song was also played live in 2003 and 2004. It was considered as a song for the new Sun album. My favorite version is from the 1/23/03 Peel Session. It's almost always played on guitar.

John, John

This is a bit of a hybrid song. Chan's lyrics and chords recall the song "Hit The Road, Jack", but mostly these are her own words. She started playing this at the end of 2005 and her early versions dont sound finished. By the time she was touring europe at the end of 2006 the song appears to be complete. My favorite version is from the 11/3/06 soundboard recording. She always plays this solo with guitar. It may have been considered for the new album but that is unknown. The most recent version is probably from 11/20/13.

My Daddy Was A Musician

Chan started playing this in 2001. I am not a sure about the title of this one and I dont recall her ever mentioning one. It's kind of a talking blues song which hangs on one chord, similar to alot of other songs she performs. My favorite version is from the 2/23/03 Brussels Radio Session where it immediately follows a version of I Dont Blame You. She always plays this on guitar. She would return again to the theme of her coming from a family of musicians in her reworked version of House Of The Rising Sun which she would start playing in 2005, effectively replacing this song in her setlists. The both share the same key of Am.

Jump Baby Jump

This is a cover by Jessie Mae Hemphill. Chan started playing this sometime around 2000 and seems to have stopped playing it by 2004. It was played on her 2013 solo tour. Again this is a one chord song on guitar. My favorite version is the one from 6/26/04 where she incorporates some of the lyrics from "My Daddy Was A Musician".

Leopard And The Lamb

One of her very best unreleased songs. This would have fit in perfectly on Moon Pix and could very well have been written around the time she recorded the album. I love the lyric "Step outside, lets make a memory". It was performed live regularly through 1998 and 1999. This was one the songs mentioned as being considered for the Sun album. My favorite version is from the 8/31/98 Paris Radio Session where she is joined by one of her touring guitarists. The title of the song may have been influenced by a lyric from Patti Smith's, "People Have The Power", which is a phrase Chan later have put onto several t-shirts she wore in concert around 2007. It was also played on her 2013 solo tour. 

Let Sadness Not Be Attached To Your Name

This is also one her best unreleased songs. She started playing this in 1998 and it continued to appear in concerts all the way up to 2005. It's a haunting, forlorn piano song. It includes a few lyrics from "Keep On Runnin", which would appear on You Are Free. Chan talks about the writing of this song in her interview from the 6/18/00 VPRO radio session. To me, this is a classic example of what Chan means when she says she doesnt think of her songs as sad but triumphant. This was also considered as a song for the Sun album. The performance on the radio session is great, but my favorite version is from the 5/14/99 concert where it goes on for about 8 minutes(!). I hope this appears on an album one day as I think this song is beautiful. It was most recently played on her 2013 solo tour.

Mountaintops

Essentially a 2 chord song, this was also mentioned as a possible song on the Sun album. Though it was known to be played at
shows, the only version I've ever heard is from the "Clear The Room" rarities bootleg. I'm still trying to find information on the recording of this and the version of Jump Baby Jump that appear on that album. It appears to be a demo, but when and where was it recorded? My guess would be in the 96-98 timeframe. It's played on guitar and at 7:30, one of the longer songs she has recorded.

Norma Jean

I am not sure of the title for this song. Sometimes it's labled as "Christopher's Walkin'", which is a lyric from the song. It's a piano song with a distinctive melody. She appears to have started playing it in 2004 and there are live versions from 2005 and 2006. It's nearly always coupled with another song, sometimes "Names", and "Why". It appears the song is unfinished or just very short with only a few lyrics. It might been one of the songs recorded during You Are Free and not used but I am just guessing at this. It sounds like it could have fit on that album. My favorite version of this is from the 9/16/04 concert where its combined with "Names" in a way that is unlike any other version I've heard. It was played most recently on the 2013 solo tour.

Oh, Time

Quite possibly the best of her unreleased songs that she has played live. This was also considered for the Sun album but Chan has said it will not be featured on the album. This is unfortuate, but there are a number of live performances from 2005 and 2006 that are wonderful. My favorite version (and maybe the best one) is from the 11/6/06 concert FM Broadcast where its played as an encore. I very much hope that an official recording of this will appear one day. This was played at the 11/14/13 NYC concert. 

Real Life

This song will most likely appear on the new Sun album as she has been playing this live for about a year now. However, it appears to have first been played in 2002. The newer live versions are very different from how it was originally played. The 2002 version is a solo guitar performance. What's most striking are the lyrics. In true Cat Power fashion she cuts right to the point: "Real Life is ordinary, sometimes you dont want to live. Sometimes you gotta do what want you dont want to do. To get away with an unordinary life." Wow, who hasnt felt like that before, huh? My favorite version remains to be the 5/4/02 concert version I heard first.

Update: This song is no longer unreleased. It appeared at the 6th track on "Sun" in a radically different form to the early live 2002 versions, as well as the live 2010-2011 versions. It was rehearsed for the Sun Tour but never made the setlist.

Silent Machine

Another contender for the Sun album, as mentioned in interviews. This song appears to have been first performed in 1998 and out of the setlist by 2000. My favorite version is from the 10/3/98 KVRX radio session.

Update: This song is also no longer unreleased. It appeared in radically different form as at the 9th track on "Sun". It was played at all Sun Tour concerts.

When I Lay Me Down

Not sure on the title of this one, which is also one my very favorite unreleased tracks. Appears to have been first performed in 2000 and it would not be out of place on the Covers Record (except its not a cover). This was still being performed as late as 2005. Played on piano, it appears to be a early version of "The Moon", as it shares some lyrics. My favorite version is from the 6/19/03 concert, which is the most complete and well played version I have heard.

Why

Mentioned as a title for consideration for the Sun album in an interview. I can only assume this is the real title for the song that Chan played in concert from 2003 to 2006, which starts with the words "Why do you make me feel so bad?". This was performed for BBC radio in 2005 where it was titled "Baby Blue", which is my favorite version of the song. This is another of my very favorite unreleased tracks that I hope will one day see official release. This was recently performed on the 2013 solo tour.

Nice review. I don't know all these songs that well: i prefer to keep a few surprises for the album. Anyway, i agree with you on "Oh Time" (aka Time is a great healer), which is a beautiful ballad on piano. It's so good that in a perfect world, it would be released as a single, but i fear that the rythm of the song is too slow for that.

It'll be very interesting to discover the differences between the early shapes of these songs and what they look like on the album. For instance, the creation of "Sittin on a ruin" is fascinating: it seemed to start as a joke and 8 years later, it's a gorgeous fully formed song!

I imagine the album is going to be incredible and surprising. After The Greatest and Jukebox, I really like that fact the she took it upon herself to play everything and make it her vision. I think she mentioned in one interview some years ago that she was learning drums and you see clips from time to time her getting behind the kit at concerts to have fun. So I'm excited to hear the one-woman-band Chan experience, assuming that it comes out that way. You can hear her playing drums on the King Rides By recording, anyway.

You're right about "Sittin' On A Ruin", it did totally seem to be a joke. I kind of get the feeling that when it came time to start work on some new material, she might've been unsure what to record and started looking back through her old songs for stuff to work on. Then maybe someone in the band might've pointed out that "Sittin' On A Ruin" bit and asked her about it. That might be how it was all worked out. For all we know most of these songs could be recorded already for various albums and just put away. Maybe one day an awesome Cat Power box set will come out with some of this stuff. That would be so awesome and exciting. Either way, I'll be happy with whatever she releases.

I also want to add that I really doubt any of these songs I just listed will appear on the album. But I would love to be suprised. I really think that we're going to get all 10 or so of the new songs and maybe 1 or 2 things that havent been played live. But, who knows?

I suppose I prefer the Dirty Delta Blues band over all her earlier touring bands, but am very happy to hear she did this album herself. It's obvious that she is most comfortable when she has direct control over her music.

I prefer the full band version performed 10 days later at Berkeley.

I found this setlsit from a 2007 Dublin concert, that includes "Life of the Party". Have you ever heard this one?

"Life Of The Party" is almost certainly someone else's name for "Tracks Of My Tears", which has the line, "People say I'm the life of the party because I tell a joke or two".

I think that setlist is from "Timfest 2007", still trying to work out the exact dates/cities she played there (where are you Vanilla_dancer?). It ran from 10/25/07 to 10/29/07 and it looks like she gave at least 2 performances at this festival. I see multiple dates listed for Cat Power though so it makes it confusing as to which ones are correct. I'll edit these concerts together one day.
