Re: 11/6/13 - Nashville, TN, 3rd & Lindsley
So much to write about and I have to run so I will come back later tonight with more details. But I had an awesome time guys! She played Let Me Go on piano, Monster on piano, Great Expectations on guitar, Colors And The Kids, and many more that I didnt expect.
When I walked in after they opened the doors, Chan was finishing her soundcheck at the stage. She recognized me right away and said "Hi! How are you?! You crazy motherfucker, you're at all my shows!" I asked if I could have a picture taken and she said "Yeah, let's do it!" Annika took the picture.

Re: 11/6/13 - Nashville, TN, 3rd & Lindsley
This was my first time seeing Chan play solo. It was exactly the kind of long rambling affair that I was hoping for and I really enjoyed it. I'm not for sure if she had been drinking, since I myself was somewhat plastered. But she did ask if anyone had any white tequila at one point. She also lit a cigarette during Colors And The Kids and stuck it behind her ear with the lit part pointing behind her towards her hair which was worrying (especially for her hair). She also let out a lot of weird comments most of which were off-mic but were very interesting. Something about "a rag-doll Katherine Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, okay I'll go back to playing now..."
The set was heavy on You Are Free era, which was awesome! But it was also lean on stuff from The Greatest. I only wish she had played Maybe Not, but I am not complaining because she played Let Me Go!! At one point someone requested Metal Heart and she said she hadnt played it for so long she couldnt remember the chords. She also turned down a request for Silver Stallion because she said she couldnt play slide guitar. I thought she played just about everything as well as could be expected. Highlights for me were Let Me Go, Monster, Brave Liar, Leopard And The Lamb, Evolution, Wolf Among Wolves. Some songs I felt like she was making up new lyrics. But she did have many lyric sheets with her which were print-outs. At the close of the show I scooped up the ones for Great Expectations, Love & Communication, Hate, Wolf Among Wolves, and The Party.
It was a 2 hour show, and this is certainly one of the longest shows she has played in at least 2 years. And I almost wonder if Chan played so long just to kind of jump-start her musical batteries. Or maybe she was being kind because we were left waiting for so long til she came on. I think it was a 45 minute wait? I am not too sure about this.
I posted the setlist above, but here is a breakdown of the songs.

Oh, I almost forgot to talk about Nico Turner. Her set was really etheral. I asked her before the show if she was nervous and she said she was. During the show she re-started a couple songs and at one point asked how much time she had left. But she was really humble and doing her best and the crowd was rallying for her. It was really kind of spacy guitar strumming and her vocals were low but I really enjoyed it.

What a great experience it must have been! It's very cool that we had a witness there.
I'm really surprised that there was absolutely no songs from SUN. I suppose that they must be difficult to play without a backing band but it never stopped Chan before (remember Satisfaction).

Re: 11/6/13 - Nashville, TN, 3rd & Lindsley
It was! After so many Sun concerts it was great to hear something different, some songs I always wanted to hear. I didnt mind that a lot of songs were incomplete. I loved the spontaneity! At times she mentioned being ''shut down in Belfast". She must've been referring to her 6/24/03 concert there. This was at the tail end of the You Are Free - Europe Leg, which were some of her more inebriated concerts. She didnt seem that drunk to me at this show, though. But she clearly had those concerts on her mind. On a lot of the solo concert recordings, I feel like sometimes she finds this spot in her playing, she catches her groove. And she talks about this in her interviews where she says that the shows are only perfect so much percent of the time. I dont know that she ever found it at this show. But just the same, a lot of great moments hearing these songs performed again and the tour is just beginning.Nicolaoua wrote:What a great experience it must have been! I kind of expected the Sun songs to be absent. Stuff like ''Ruin" and "Peace And Love" wouldnt work very well without the band. But, you're right, "Silent Machine", "Real Life" (formerly solo live songs), and "Nothin But Time" could easily sound good.

That's great ! I never would have thought she would perform so many songs !
Very good signs for the rest of the tour !
Which of the other shows are you going to ?
And yes, a solo rendition of "Silent Machine" would be nice (although I must admit I have a preference for the 2 guitar version she used to perform around 1998) !
