Post  Cokelike Sat 26 Oct - 9:57

In this topic I would like to detail all of Cat Power's radio session performances.

Cat Power's radio sessions are all of generally good to great sound quality. The playing on the early performances can be rough, but her later sessions (especially from 1998 on) are among her live best work, IMO. Nearly all of them are solo sessions and many unreleased tracks have been featured over the years. There are also many interviews which show a relaxed and funny side of Chan. Her radio sessions have been the focus of many fan-made "bootleg" compilations. But it can get confusing to figure out exactly what was recorded when and where. I have already made a topic for some of these recordings, and many others I have yet to write about, so I will mainly try to just list what is known about each session without getting in-depth on the songs themselves.

Additionally, since Cat Power has only made a few internet-only sessions (AOL, Rolling Stone), I will include those here as well.

This list is likely incomplete and has errors, so any help is appreciated! Smile

Rec: 3/XX/96
Aired: 3/XX/96? - Portland, OR, ''Drinking From Puddles'' program
1. We Dance - 3:02

This is a Pavement cover. This track ended up on the Undercover EP where it runs to 2:47. It was later released on a
1999 CD compilation of performances of tracks from the "Drinking From Puddles" program where it runs to 3:02.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rec: 6/XX/96?
Aired: 6/14/96 - Cambridge, MA, WMBR, "Breakfast Of Champions" program
1. American Flag
2. Good Clean Fun
3. Nude As The News (aborted)
4. Top Expert

Presumably recorded before 6/14/96 because she played in NYC on that date. Does anyone have a copy of this?
I have no other information on this session other than what I found here, which says the session exists on DAT:

Rec: 9/XX/96

I have no details on this session at this time.

Rec: 11/7/96?
Aired: 11/7/96 - Amsterdam, Netherlands, VPRO, Radio 5, "De Avonden" program
1. Back Of Your Head - 3:42

Chan with electric guitar. There is a 40 minute recording of this session which I havent heard that also includes an interview.
"Back Of Your Head" was officially released on "Moon Pix''.
"Nude As The News" was officially released on a 7" that came with Spunk magazine Issue 6.

My copy is 256k Mp3s. "Nude As The News" sounds like it was sourced from the 7''. Anyone have this in better quality or including the interview?

Chan with electric guitar, Tim Foljahn on guitar, Steve Shelly on percussion, keyboard (for cymbals sounds). My copy of this is FLAC, but I am not sure what the source was before that except I think it was originally cassette. This is probably the lowest quality soundwise, of all the radio sessions. This session still exists at the radio station.

Aired: 8/31/98 - Paris, France, La Maison de la Radio, Studio 105, "White Session" program

8. Color And The Kids - 5:17
Total Time - 27:17

Chan on electric guitar and piano, and Mark Moore on electric guitar. This session circulates under both dates, but 7/17/99 cannot be correct because Mark Moore wouldnt have been with her at that time. My copy of this is 160k mp3s, does anyone have this in better quality?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rec: 10/3/98
Aired: 10/3/98 - Austin, TX, KVRX, "Local Live" program

Chan on electric guitar. These tracks were once available on KVRX's website. All of these songs were unreleased at the time, but all ended up on a future Cat Power album. My copy of this is 256k mp3s. Does anyone have this in better quality?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rec: 11/5/98
Aired: 11/5/98 - NYC, KCRW, "Brave New World" program

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rec: 11/13/98?
Aired: 11/13/98? - Milton Keynes, England, CMRK, "The Garden Of Earthly Delight's" program
1. Intro - 0:33

6. Sea Of Love - 3:20
7. From Fur City - 0:55
8. From Fur City - 3:37
9. Talking - 3:06
10. We Dance - 3:24
Total Time: 28:11

Chan on acoustic guitar. This comes from a cassette tape. My copy is a 160k mp3, posted on soundcloud. Not sure on the date on this one, but judging from her tour dates this makes the most sense to me. Does anyone have this in better quality?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rec: 11/30/98
http://planetconcert3.free.fr/Catpower.htm
http://planetclaire.bandcamp.com/album/cat-power-planet-claire-session-1998-11-20
Aired: 11/30/98? - Paris France, Aligre Radio, "Planet Claire" program
1. Intro - 0:53
2. Kingsport Town - 4:01
3. Wild Is The Wind - 3:35
4. Interlude - 1:34
5. Red Apples - 3:20
6. Interlude - 2:10
7. Great Expectations - 4:15
Total Time - 19:48

Chan on acoustic guitar (though a piano would've helped).  My copy of this cames from the Planet Claire website linked
above, where "Kingsport Town" is mislabled "The Winter Wind", but I also have another copy that includes the Intro and Interludes (talking).

The Planet Claire link above lists this as 11/20/98. But since she was in Germany on that date and she played Paris on 11/29/98, 11/30/98 seems to be the correct date of recording.

Additionally, this page (http://web.archive.org/web/20050407161745/http://prevot.denis.free.fr/Catb.htm) which archives the
the photos from the session lists the 11/30/98 date, for further confirmation.

1. Good Woman - 4:10

Chan on acoustic guitar. There seems to be a 17 minute long version of this session, but all I have is this one song as a 256k mp3. Anyone have more of this?

13. He Was A Friend Of Mine - 4:02
Total Time - 42:51

Chan on acoustic guitar, electric guitar(?) and piano. Not sure on the date for this one but judging from her tour dates, this makes the most sense to me. The 2nd performance of ''Sophisticated Lady'' is on guitar. Anyone know the name of the program that aired this?

My copy of this is from a 256k mp3, that was probably taken from VPRO's website. Does anyone have this in better quality?

9. Oh, Sister
10. Knockin' On Heavens Door
11. Freebird
Total Time - ~27 minutes.

Chan on acoustic guitar and piano. * = plus additional overdubbed vocals.

Yes, the same date this Peel Session was recorded, Chan's VPRO session was being aired (It must have been Cat Power Day in Europe). Finding both the VPRO session and Peel session online with the same date, as well as many of the same songs confused me at first. What was correct? I now believe the information I have listed for these 2 sessions is correct (but, of course, let me know if I wrong).

I have the 7/20/00 and 8/31/00 broadcasts in FLAC. For the 12/13/00 broadcast, I have a 128k mp3. For the 1/12/02 broadcast, I have FLAC.

The original broadcasts, 7/20/00 and 8/31/00,  have John Peel intros to almost every song. Its funny to listen to Peel keep mentioning that he will play Chan's take on "Freebird", because at the end it turns out to be very short 45 second version.

The 12/13/00 rebroadcast has only a few intros before the songs, as he plays all 11 songs in 3 separate segments of his program. Its revealed that songs 1-3 were all played back to back, 5-8 were played back to back and 9-11 were also played back to back. So this version is a bit better then the original broadcasts.

At some point, I'll go through all of these tracks, song by song and find the most complete versions of each one (probably only a difference of a few seconds) make a post about it.

Rec: 7/19/01 - Suffolk, UK, Peel Acres, "Peel Session"
Aired: 8/23/01 - London, England, BBC, "Peel Session"
1. Intro - 1:09
2. The Party - 3:10
3. Interview - 0:41
4. Intro - 0:28
5. Baby Doll - 3:09
6. Interlude - 0:24
7. Islands - 2:40
8. Come On In My Kitchen - 3:52
Total Time - 15:33

Chan on electric guitar. My copy is FLAC.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rec: XX/XX/01?
Aired: 8/XX/01? - London, England, XFM, "Xposure" program
1. The Party - 4:10

Chan on acoustic guitar. My copy is FLAC, but unsure what is was before that. It seems weird she would only record 1 song for the program, there must be an interview too at least. Anyone know any more about this session?

Rec: 11/5/01

9. Fool - 3:17
10. Werewolf - 3:39
11. Interview Part 7 - 2:08
12. Interview Part 8 - 10:15
Total Time - 54:14

Chan on electric guitar. My copy is 128k mp3s -> FLAC and comes from the link above. The 3 songs are very nice, even if Chan doesnt seem to like her performance. While it looks as though she was interviewed a lot from the times above, this is not an especially interesting interview as Chan is left out of a lot of the conversation. This was 2 hour program and much music from other artists was played, which I have omitted from my track times listed above.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rec: 1/XX/03?
Aired: 2/23/03 - Brussels, Belgium, Radio, "Duyster" program
1. I Dont Blame You - 3:19
2. My Daddy Was A Musician - 3:41
3. Baby Doll - 3:00
4. Interview
Total Time - 10:00

Chan on electric guitar. The guys at the "Duyster" website were nice enough to send me a 160k mp3 of this session, which shows that all 3 songs were recorded back to back, and its slightly more complete than the 256k mp3s I have. They told me an interview was also recorded, but Chan's state was such that they chose not to air it.

Chan on electric guitar and piano. I have 1-4 and 6-10 as 256k mp3s. 1-7 were posted as a video on KCRW's website. I dont know the exact order the songs were played. Does anyone have this in better quality?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rec: 10/18/03
Aired: 10/18/03 - NYC, WFUV, "Vin Scelea's Idiot's Delight" program

Total Time - ~4 hours

I dont think Chan performs on this session, but rather talks with the host. But I'm including it here anyway because its more a music-oriented program than a typical interview. Many Cat Power studio tracks were played and Chan picked out some music to play as well (James Brown, Whites Stripes). I would love to hear this program. Does anyone have this?

Rec: 11/XX/03?

2. I Want To Be The Boy To Warm Your Mother's Heart

Chan on piano. I have the Rebroadcast from 1/XX/06, where you can hear John Peel explain that other songs were played on his and Chris Coco's "Blue Room" program. I dont know what these other songs were. Another session I would love to hear in complete form. My copies are 256k mp3s, anyone have this in better quality?

"The Black Sessions were the French Radio music shows and very much similar to BBC Radio 1 John Peel programmes but with the presence of a small audience of about 200 people. The original programme came to an end in June of 2011 after almost 20 years of existence."

I have this in FLAC.

Aired: 9/3/12 - West Hollywood, CA, OHWOW Gallery, "Know-Wave Radio"
1. "Know-Wave Radio" - 37:47

This one is a weird one, definitely the most random Cat Power audio I have heard. "Know-Wave Radio" isnt a real radio station like the rest of this list. Its a pirate radio station run by Aaron Bondaroff. Here is a quote I found from him (http://www.openingceremony.us/entry.asp?pid=6477):

"Whatever is on my pirate radio station, which operates out of my home Charles Mansion, in LA. The station is called KNOW-WAVE: there are always interesting guests and music playing sporadically. It's kinda like Twitter or Instagram in that you have to keep checking in with it all day—things just happen when they happen."

Things just happen. Well, that is exactly what my copy (which is incomplete) sounds like. Its basically Chan talking with other people, some of it is funny, some of it is tedious, and some Bob Dylan CD tracks are played. There is no host. I dont know what (if anything) Chan performed while she was on the program. My copy is Mp3. If anyone has anymore of this program, please let me know.

Chan and Gregg (piano). My copy is ASF (from BBC website) -> WAV -> FLAC.

SUMMARY:

The radio sessions of Cat Power are a treasure trove of great music. I have 37 sessions listed above, though there are probably more that I dont know about. Dont let my source listings fool you. Though I have most of these in Mp3 form, all but the earliest ones sound great. Yeah, I'd like to upgrade whatever I can, but its the music that matters, and us fans should be thankful to have so much of this to enjoy.

So which ones are the best? I would list the following ones that I have heard as essential:

12/19/96 - Paris Radio. WWTCT-era. These versions are rough, but we dont have many versions of these songs.
8/31/98 - Paris Radio. Moon Pix-era. I consider the take of "Leopard And The Lamb" to be the definitive take, it's got Mark Moore on guitar also, and so this almost makes it sound like a "Moon Pix" outtake.
11/5/98 - KCRW. Moon Pix-era. All 4 KCRW sessions are essential. This one has her Moon Pix backing band of Mark Moore and Jim White.
6/14/00 - VPRO
6/18/00 - BBC. Peel Session - This session and the VPRO session are almost like an alternate version of "The Covers Record", featuring a number of covers that didnt make the album. Note also that this is the only radio session featuring vocal overdubs (on 2 tracks).
2/27/03 - KCRW. You Are Free-era. Also on video.
11/XX/05 - BBC, "Blue Room" - I consider this take of "Why" to be the definitive take.
9/12/06 - KCRW. This has the only radio take of "The Greatest" and its solo, and its beautiful. Whole session is top-notch.
1/23/08 - Paris Radio. An excellent Jukebox-era live set.
2/29/08 - KCRW. Another excellent live-in-the-studio set. Also on video.

Please feel free to correct or add anything. Thanks! Smile

I stumbled upon this blog about John Peel, here's a rebroadcast from December 2000 of the first Cat Power session in July of that year:
