SUN and the charts: a survey

I suggest to follow in this topic what SUN will do in the charts.
Of course there are no numbers yet but i find it funny to start looking what is SUN's position in Amazon stores all over the world.

In France i fear that she won't be n°1 but definitely top 5.

UK: 89 (there is clearly a problem with the UK)

So you can understand why i am so surprised to see 4 concerts scheduled in Germany, 2 in Italy and only 1 in France...

Interesting, I think there are still some Cat Power fans who need to get a copy of the album though. You cant beat picking this up for $8 here in the US at Target and Best Buy (I bought 2 and gave a copy to a friend for her birthday).

True, music sales have been tanking for a long time now. No doubt that has an effect on every release.

Yep, $8. It's a temporary discount but its a great idea. I was going to pass on the CD for now since I have the record but its $8, so I couldnt walk away from that.

I've found a number for France: 7th, with 5700 copies (i need a confirmation for this figure). The market is really dying, isn't it? Meanwhile she sold 1000 tickets in 2 days for her Paris concert...

The concert used to promote the records. Now the record promotes the concert.

True, the main problem is that the record companies don't get any money from the concerts...a fact that many people tend to forget. Once they will lose more money than they earn by producing music, this will be it: the end of the line!

I wonder if it would have made a difference for the charts position if the Cherokee video had been released 1 week ago. Without a video you have basically no TV air play and thus less buyers...
We'll see what happen next week.

Hi everyone. I've been a fan ever since I saw Chan play I Don't Blame You on Jools Holland back in 2003. Now I have finally found an active forum.

Just a note about the the Billboard position: as good as #10 in the U.S. is, it could and should have been three places higher there. Hits Daily Double has the album at #7 with 25,800 copies sold, but Billboard obviously discounted 2,000 copies or so, for whatever reason, taking it down to #10. That's still really good for an album I like (they usually always get to #80), but it's a bit sad that corporate bum wipes are denying her what she truly earned.

Oh well. #7 next album.

What you said is interesting: somehow Billboard forgot to count all the albums sold? It deserves an enquiry.

I don't know for sure, but I think it may have something to do with the deluxe edition vinyl copies sold at Matador Records web store. Sometimes Billboard doesn't count albums sold by the label. Some other labels started lying and saying they sold a lot more copies than they really did. That must have something to do with it, because I can't think of any other reason.

Finally, SUN is ranked number 6 in France among new albums (there is another ranking that includes compilation too where Cat Power is 7) :

Thanks. There seemed to be a lot to talk about with Sun, so I decided it was time to make the effort to write as big of an article as I could. They should not be limited to only Mariah Carey or Rihanna.

And thank you for that. When it comes to French album chart positions, there is a lot of confusion about the different charts you have there in France. On some websites, an album is listed at #6; on other websites, the same album is listed at #8. It's nice to finally know the difference.

And just in case anyone is wondering, the album sold at least 50,000 copies worldwide, according to Media Traffic. Media Traffic is slightly dubious - they include only the sales figures they can find publicly - so there's a lot of charts they don't know about. But it is a good prediction of the least amount of copies it has sold. This compares to the 65,000 copies sold worldwide by Jukebox on its first week.

If Jukebox reached #4 in France, the album was heavily promoted by TV appearances that helped a lot. Without any TV and without a video, #6 for SUN is a pretty decent result.

SUN slided to #18 in France for its 2nd week.

In the USA, #32 on Billboard 200.
