She even seems more comfortable engaging with the audience in this manner than she does through music, tense by her own admission. At Fate of the Human Carbine’s “They all come and peep through a hole in the wall/Keep the bastards guessing” line, she pulls away from the mic, from the lyric itself. “That’s para-fuckin-noia” she tells us, from a better emotional place than from when it was penned twenty years ago.

Fate Of The Human Carbine? Was this really played? Usually, I would dismiss this as a reviewers error, but they are quoting her as singing these lyrics.

Be forewarned this is going to be a terrible review. No, not a review of a terrible performance, just an ill-conceived and badly constructed review. For a start I was late: a post-dinner / pre-gig nap that ran over. So I missed a few songs. From what I read on social media Chan started off on guitar but by the time I got to my seat she was behind an upright piano accompanying herself with limited chops.

As detailed in other posts on here my experience of previous Cat Power performances in Dublin has been fairly mixed, with plenty of eccentricities to the fore. When Chan has a bit of a coughing fit between songs and drifted in a monologue about zombies in the airport, I feared for the worst. Thankfully once she starts and continues singing all this is forgotten, particularly as she makes her way through a trio of songs from 2003’s You Are Free: Maybe Not, Names and the stunning I Don’t Blame You.

Then it was time for some more bizarre and comical banter via Shane McGowan, Medication, rent and taxi drivers. But back to the music: A bare piano version of her Cassius collaboration Feel Like Me, a short snippet of Sun’s 3,6,9 and run through Bacharach and David’s What the World Needs Now Is Love. After some more banter and weirder heckles about having 3 kidneys we got a newish song and a great version of The Greatest.

Just to ramp up the awkwardness a guy then walked to the stage and handed her a note with a Charles Bukowski quote about vomiting. She then switched to guitar fine fine versions of Werewolf and Naked, If I Want To. The Sun bonus track Bully get and added oomph from her using two mics to get a double tracked vocal effect. After some more monologues she finished out the night with a couple of acapella snippets before getting a semi-standing ovation.

And that was it. Probably would have enjoyed in more if I had been on time but thankfully , despite all the ticks and rambling, when she opens her mouth to sing Cat Power is still one of the most amazing voices out there.
