RIP Coleman Lewis

Sad news hit the Atlanta music scene when word spread this weekend that Coleman Lewis, former guitarist for several Atlanta acts, including Smoke, Cat Power, and most recently Ignitor Fool, aka Welfare, died sometime Friday night or early Saturday morning.

Visitation is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. this Wed., June 4 at Turner Funeral Home in Decatur.

There isn't much news to report at this time, but a post by Coleman's sister, Claire Lewis Evans, on the Benjamin Remembered Facebook page states:

A lot of people are looking for more information about my brother, Coleman, who left this world at some point Friday night or early Saturday morning - not a day sooner (despite the rumors to contrary). We are working out the details for a visitation at some point in the next few days, and will cremate his body, then hold a service for him a little later in the summer (details TBD). Yes, it was heroin, we think it was accidental, and I hope he had a good last ride. He hadn't been using recently and had actually been working.
Everyone who loved him will remember the fantastic music *and son* he left behind, as well as god-only-knows how many ridiculous stories and hilarious and painful memories of Coleman's 41 year run on this earth. He was unapologetically and unmistakably himself, and of course we will all miss him. His absence, however, won't stop our loving and remembering him.

I dont know exactly how many concerts Coleman played with Chan and the band during the You Are Free tour. But he was with her from February 2003 to June 2003, and also he apparently appears on the 11/XX/03, WXPN FM, Philadelphia, "World Cafe", Radio Session (one of the sessions I am missing). I believe all the 2004 band concerts featured Matt Hartman on guitar, but I am not sure.

Thank you Cokelike, i was reading that he had played with Cat Power but i couldn't find when. This 2003 tour is still puzzling me. Were the artists in the band playing with Chan considered as "Cat Power" members or not? The Cat Power concept (stage name for Chan Marshall, name of the band) is always difficult to explain.
Anyway, it's sad news.

I saw that on Chan's instagram this morning but I didn't know he had been playing with Cat Power, so thanks Cokelike.

Yeah, I have to think that anyone who has played live with Chan with the ''Cat Power'' billing (except for like one-off appearances, like for example J. Mascis and Dexter Romweber last year) would be considered a member of the band for the time they were with her. So, in my mind, people like Glen Thrasher, Mark Moore, Damon Moore, Fletcher Liegerot, Steve Shelley, Tim Foljahn, Coleman Lewis, Margaret White, Will Fratesi, Matt Hartman, Jim White and that other drummer she had around the Moon Pix tour would all be considered past members of Cat Power. I would probably also include Mick Turner in there due to his vital role on Moon Pix (maybe an honorary member). I also consider all the DDBB guys as members of Cat Power even though they had their own collective name, because they were never a separate band outside of playing with Chan. Likewise, the Sun Touring Band (or ''The Brigade'') are all members of Cat Power as well. I dont consider the people in the MRB as ''Cat Power''. Those guys are session guys who do work for many people. Thats my take on it.
