This is the first performance of the year and also the first solo performance ever. Truly, a milestone in the history of Cat Power. By this time Chan had been living in NYC for over a year and a half. In 1993, she had recorded and released her first single, "Headlights". After her bandmate Glen Thrasher had left NYC, Chan stopped playing shows for about a year. Her friends in "God Is My Co-Pilot" urged her to play this show. Though she had always had some of her friends with her onstage, Chan now played solo for the first time. Gerald Cosloy from Matador records had seen Chan play in NYC prior to this show. But it was directly after this show that Chan would receive a message from him to open for Liz Phair. Within 2 years Chan would be signed to Matador Records.

From her XX/XX/96 Weedbus Interview:

I ended up playing my first solo show in April 1994 in CBGBs Gallery as support to God Is My Co-Pilot after they suggested I "show up". I eventually showed up about an hour before the gig as I saw my name billed in a listings mag! I didn't really want to play without Glenn but I went ahead and I ended up doing some gigs with God Is My Co-Pilot and Truman's Water outside New York.

From her 4/XX/97 London Interview:

...We never played again for another year. I was just writing songs in my room but i didn't really care about doing it in front of other people. Then God Is My Co-Pilot called me and said 'Chan you really should play out'. I was scared, the idea of getting on-stage by myself was treacherous. I was living a weird life, not knowing anyone and going to shows by myself. They asked if I wanted to play a show so i thought 'fuck, why not!' So, I got on stage and played my songs and freaked out.

From her 12/XX/97 Gravity Girls Interview:

My friends kept saying they wanted me to play by myself, and I thought they were out of their minds, there was no way that I could do it. Through the year they kept saying 'blah, blah, blah', and I just kept saying 'no way'. So then, one night, they phoned up and said: 'we've booked a show for you. If you show up, you show up. If you don't you don't.' And I thought that was funny, I thought 'no fucking way', and I didn't call them back. And then I looked at the paper, and at CBGB it said 'Cat Power'.

From her 10/XX/98 Now.com Interview:

The people in God Is My Co-Pilot booked my first solo show in New York without me knowing about it. My drummer got addicted to heroin and left town, so I just stopped playing music altogether, because he was the one who wanted us to play. I hadn't done any music at all for a year. Then one day I got home and saw there was a message on my answering machine from my friend in God Is My Co-Pilot saying I had a solo show to play at CBGB's Gallery. I checked the paper and there it was: 'Cat Power solo.' So you see, everyone's more responsible for my music than I am.

From her 2007 Soft Focus Interview:

...And then he went back to Atlanta, and I didnt play for a long time. And then someone booked me a show. Sharon from this band called God Is My Co-Pilot. She said, 'I booked you a solo show'... She was like, 'Chan, I hope you're not mad at me, but CBGB's gallery opened and I booked you a solo show there. 9 o'clock on Sunday.' And, um, I was mad and I didnt talk to her. And I picked up a Village Voice on the way home from work and I was watching the Simpsons. And I was pretending that I wasnt going to open the Village Voice at 8:30 when the commerical break. And so I picked up it and it said, '9:00, Cat Power solo'. So I was like, 'Fuck', 'cause I knew Gerald Cosloy would go, Harry Druzd from Max Fish and Jeff Cashvan from Salmonella Skin would go and pay the 4 dollars. And I was like, 'fuck'. So I took off my tie, I was waitressing, grabbed my amp and guitar, walked up there, played my first show. Got home, Gerald, answering machine: 'Chan, I'm really mad that you didnt (Gerald is from Matador Records), Chan, I'm really mad that you didnt... Not mad, but I cant believe that you didnt tell me that you were playing solo. You wanna open up on Thursday night for Liz Phair? At the town hall? You'll get $200.' And thats like, you know, good money. 'You'll get $200 and you wont be billed.' I was like, 'Fuck yeah, dude.'
