Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power, brought her sweet-yet-commanding voice to Santiago’s Teatro La Cúpula on Saturday night for her fourth performance in Chile since 2009. While Marshall admitted feeling under the weather and the show lacked energy, the artist showcased her impressive voice nonetheless.

Saturday’s show mainly featured songs from Marshall’s latest album, “Sun,” which she released in September 2012. Diverging from the mainly folk and blues songs of Marshall’s eight previous studio albums, “Sun” introduces an electro-pop element to the artist’s dark, soulful sound.

Marshall’s performance in Santiago kicked off on a slightly confusing note when audience members arrived at Teatro La Cúpula to find rows of chairs filling the auditorium, hinting at a more subdued, seated affair. But that assumption was quickly overturned with the first notes of Marshall’s opening song — a fresh interpretation of her classic ballad “The Greatest” backed by a four-piece band. Fans ditched the chairs en masse and headed straight for the stage, ready to rock.

Aside from playing electric guitar on “Silent Machine,” Marshall stuck strictly to vocals and quirky interpretive dance moves throughout her performance. Known for her erratic live show behavior and history of substance abuse, Marshall’s onstage vulnerability was apparent throughout Saturday night’s show. Nevertheless, her beautifully haunting vocals left a lasting impression.

Marshall closed her show on a high note with “Ruin,” the high-energy and rhythmically complex single off of “Sun.” After the set, Marshall remained onstage throwing roses to the crowd, looking genuinely happy for the first time in the evening.
