This was the thirteenth performance of the tour. The Bonnaroo Festival ran from 6/15 to 6/18. Cat Power's performance was followed by My Morning Jacket. Also on the bill that weekend were Chan's friends, Beck and Sonic Youth.

Soon, the band would start adding songs like "Crazy", "Cross Bones Style", and "Naked If I Want To" into the setlist. But at this point its Chan's solo songs filling out the setlist beyond the Greatest album material. She plays some rarities at this concert, which is always cool. It's a good concert but I think others later in the tour are better. She seems distracted by the audience and it also looks like the heat was getting to her. Sound problems seem to show up at times too.

Thanks to Mark for recording and sharing this concert. Its a stereo audience recording of an outdoor show and that is pretty much what it sounds like, good quality. Also note that in some of the videos below you can see a professional cameraman, so there must be some high quality video of this concert out there somewhere.

"The Greatest" - 0:25:
Myspace Video

"Willie" - Short clip starts at 1:20, ends at 1:35:

"Islands" - At this point the band member introductions and solos have been introduced into the middle of the song.

"Where Is My Love" - 1:28:
Myspace Video

"Who Knows Where The Time Goes" - "I have a real, uh, ugly relationship with these types of instruments, this electric thing. I'm gonna try!", says Chan. "I wish I had more water to dump on you. Happy new year!". She starts the song on piano but then stops and asks for the lights to be turned off, "They're really hot." She then restarts the song. Oddly, her sound cuts out right in the middle of a verse and it takes a minute for the audience to hear her again. It pretty much ruins the song.

"Crying, Hoping, Waiting" - This is the earliest version of this Buddy Holly cover I have and also only one of 3 live versions. The best version of this IMO is from her Rolling Stone session where she plays it on guitar instead of piano. At the end she goes straight into the next song.

"Wild As The Wind" - When Chan does the clapping part during the "You, you, you" lyric, the audience starts clapping along. Maybe because of this, Chan plays the song a little longer than normally. This is a highlight of the concert.

"House Of The Rising Sun" - "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash", Chan says before starting the song on acoustic guitar. "Sober! Not bad. Kinda cool to wake up like kinda happy and happy kind of thing."

"House Of The Rising Sun" - 5:41

"Hate" - Chan only plays a few seconds of this before asking "Should I get the electric guitar?" She changes guitars and starts again.

"John, John" - Chan ends this early saying, "Fuck it, fuck him". Then, in an exaggerated voice, "How about that band? Would you like another shot at the band? The Memphis Rhythm Band! It's Saturday Night Memphis Rhythm Band". Teenie Hodges and the band then take the stage for "Since You Been Gone". "This is a song my brother and I recorded, this is from the first album", Teenie says.

"John, John" - 2:42:

"John, John" - 3:25, further away, more complete:

"Love And Communication" - Her singing is really good here. Wish there was video of this.

"I Cant Give You Anything But Love" - Chan leads the band in a short a capella version. I think this is the earliest live version I have. It was performed at the "end" of most of the concerts this year.

"I Cant Give You Anything But Love" - 0:28:

"I Dont Blame You" - Chan plays this on piano to begin a four song encore. Her solo performances this year would be the last ones until the song was reworked in 2009.

"All I Have To Do Is Dream - Blue Moon Medley"
"I've Been Loving You Too Long - Try Me - Remember Me Medley" - Both of these medleys are great.

"Ramblin Woman" - Earliest version of this song that I have, sung here a capella in a short version. The audience claps along. "Good night, God bless, take care. Thank you so much! Sober!", Chan says at the end.

Notice that Chan's Silvertone is on stage behind her. Later in the tour the head stock was broken when it got knocked over.

Picture and Review

6/16/06 - Manchester, TN, "Bonnaroo Festival" 6-16-012

I didn’t intend to see Cat Power at Bonnaroo. It was a mistake, but one I’m glad I made. The last time I saw Chan, she appeared to be on the verge of losing it through the entire show. But at Bonnaroo, she was totally in control and even appeared to be enjoying herself. I don’t know if it was having the Memphis Rhythm Band backing her up, or just the carefree attitude of the whole festival, but whatever it was, it did a 180 for her live show.
