10/18/03 - WFUV, NYC, "Vin Scelsa's Idiot's Delight"

Now back in NYC, Chan stops over at WFUV radio to appear on Vin Scelsa's Idiot's Delight program. This is a bit of an eccentric type of radio program. The week before Chan made her appearence, the host was reading long sections of "Waiting For Godot" in between music. Appearently, Chan did not perform while visiting the station but instead conversed with the program host and made music selections. The whole program ran for about 4 hours (8pm to midnight). But I dont know how long Chan was there. A recording was made of the entire broadcast but I do not have a copy to listen to. Does anyone have this?

I was able to find the setlist including comments from the host which I have listed below:

Jack McDuff - Walking The Dog (opening theme music)
Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros - Ramshackle Day Parade
Was Not Was - I Feel Better Than James Brown
Electrelane - On Parade (title track of new 3-song EP)
Evan Lurie -Those Monkeys Weren't Typing
Catchers - Epitaph

CAT POWER - guest - conversation

Cat Power - otherwise known as Chan Marshall - is an impossible to typecast musician. She's a blues singer I suppose, in the way that Bob Dylan is a blues singer - intimate, gruff, tender, otherworldly, emotional, abstract ... a folksinger, too ... a poet, a musical painter, the heart of a punk ... her latest album is entitled You Are Free.

After last Saturday's "Waiting For Godot break down show," having Chan (pronounced Shawn) tonight was certainly taking the phrase "getting right back on the horse" to the nth degree! Radio Russian Roulette. Trial by (friendly) fire! We coulda call this one "A Coupla Manic Depressives Sittin' Around Waiting For The Gun To Off" ... I imagine that listening to us was like eavesdropping on your nutty uncle and your crazy cousin off in some corner at a family reunion! We're harmless, you know, and quite creative... but sometimes we just don't seem to be on the same planet as the rest of you. Yes, I know. Douche, indeed!

Tonight I started using a "different" approach to interviewing musicians which I plan to use more and more often - that is: no performance component to the appearance, just conversation, the guest's recordings and other music the guest might be interested in playing. It has come to be "the norm" - the expected thing - that musicians perform live when they come to radio shows (a norm I helped to establish way way back in the radio day). I've decided to take a break from this "formula" for a while.

James Brown - Try me
Cat Power - Good Woman
The White Stripes - I Want To be The Boy To Warm Your Mother's Heart
Cat Power - I Don't Blame You
Bob Dylan - Blind Willie McTell
Cat Power - Paths Of Victory (Dylan cover)
Cat Power - Free
The Pogues w/Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale Of New York
Cat Power w/Eddie Veddar - Evolution
Britta Phillips & Dean Wareham - Ginger Snaps
Billie Holiday - My Man (uptempo 1937 version)
Billie Holiday - My Man (slower 1952 version)
Cat Power - Fool
Duke Ellington - Isfahran (from his Far East Suite)
Geoff Muldaur's Futuristic Ensemble - In The Dark (from Private Astronomy: A Vision of The Music Of Bix Beiderbecke)
Randy Newman - I Think It's going To Rain Today (new solo version from The Randy Newman Songbook Vol. 1)
The Who - 1921 (from Tommy)
Electrelane - I'm On Fire (Springsteen cover)
Matthew Ryan - Long Blvd.
Electrelane - I'm On Fire
Bruce Springsteen - I'm On Fire
Willie Nile - I'm On Fire (from Light of Day: A Tribute To Bruce Springsteen, v/a)
Electrelane - I'm On Fire
Frank Black & The Catholics - My Favorite Kiss
Electrelane - I'm On Fire

I read Don DeLillo's wonderful short piece, "That Day In Rome: Movies and Memory" from The New Yorker "film issue" (October 20, 2003).

Nino Rota - La Dolce Vita Nella Villa Di Fregene (from his soundtrack for Fellini's La Dolce Vita)
Caetano Veloso - Que Não Se Vê (Come To Mi Vuoi) (from Omaggio a Federico e Giulietta; also on the new The Best Of Caetano Veloso)
Nino Rota - La Dolce Vita (la bella malinconia)
Geoff Muldaur's Futuristic Ensemble - Waiting At The End Of The Road (Irving Berlin song)
Caetano Veloso - Cucurrucucú Paloma (on The Best Of Caetano Veloso)
Steve Wynn & The Miracle 3 - If It Was Easy Everybody Would Do It (unlisted track on Static Transmission)
Richard "Groove Holmes - Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me (closing theme music)
